R. Fraedrich, Ph. D. 9:00

Dr.
Fraedrich has a biology degree from Newberry College, a Masters in Forestry from
Duke and Doctorate in Plant Pathology from Clemson.
Having worked for them since finishing his undergraduate degree, Dr.
Fraedrich is currently the Vice President of Research at Bartlett Tree Research
Laboratories.
Dr.
Fraedrich will cover the research showing that pruning young trees is one of the
best cost/benefit procedures that can be performed on trees.
His presentation will take us on to mature trees and the space management
procedures that can be carried out, as well as, dealing with the root/space
dilemma.
Robert
B. McCartney 11:00 am

Mr.
McCartney has a B. S. in Wildlife Management from Utah State University and
Masters from Louisiana State University. Mr.
McCartney is a native of Virginia and was involved with horticulture program at
Colonial Williamsburg. He came to
Aiken, SC in 1980 as co-owner of Woodlanders, Inc.
Woodlanders has since become internationally known as a mail-order source
for native, rare and newly introduced plants.
He has written and lectured extensively on horticultural and plant
conservation topics.
Mr.
McCartney has always felt the need to develop and introduce new plants for the
lower south. He has traveled
extensively in Argentina searching for new material and planting many of the new
plants in the City of Aiken creating a city-wide arboretum.
He will discuss development of the city-wide arboretum and the trials and
tribulations of introducing new plant.

MARK CHISHOLM

Mr.
Chisholm is a practicing arborist that has taken over the reins of the family
arboricultural business. He has won
1st place in the New Jersey tree climbing competition 11 consecutive times plus
being crowned the World Champion twice by the International Society of
Arboriculture.
Mr.
Chisholm will show new climbing and tree removal tools.
He will show, in an actual climbing demonstration, different climbing
techniques used to perform pruning and rigging for tree removals. This event
will include hands on participation with particiapants, please bring your own
gear.

Roy
Simkins 12:30 to 1:30

Mr.
Simkins has a B. S. in Geology from Washington and Lee University.
He has 40 years of experience of with land, timber and urban forestry
with his own business Simkins Land Company.
He is a certified arborist Chairman of the Augusta Tree Commission and
consultant for numerous golf courses and municipalities.
Mr.
Simkins has had a lifetime penchant for trees and will share his knowledge of
the notable trees of Augusta including their history and cultural habits.

Stephens 1:30 to 2:30

Mr.
Stephens has B. S. and M. S. degrees in Ornamental Horticulture from Clemson
University. He initially taught in
the Golf Course and Landscape Operations at Lake City Community College in Lake
City, Florida. In 1973, he opened
Nurseries Caroliniana, Inc., a garden center catering to new, rare and unusual
plants. Later in 1985, he opened
the Wholesale Division, growing over 1500 taxa of the newest and best ornamental
for the Southeast.
Mr.
Stephens has traveled to Japan in search of new and unusual plants for the
southeast nursery trade. He has
just returned from his most recent trip and will show some of the exciting new
plants yet to hit the market.
Charles
Phillips 2:45 to 3:45

Employed
for twenty years with the Extension Service, Mr. Phillips has been the UGA
Extension Coordinator and Agent for Columbia County for 16 years.
He has a Masters in Integrated Pest Management from Clemson University
and provides educational programs in horticulture and forestry locally for the
green industry.
Mr.
Phillips will discuss insect problems associated with trees, ornamentals and
turf in the Augusta area and provide chemical and cultural solutions to these
problems.
Sid
Mullis 3:45 to 4:45 pm
With
a B. S. in Agricultural Economics from Georgia and M. S. in Public
Administration from Brenau, Mr. Mullis represents Richmond County as the
Extension Coordinator and Agent. Being
with the Extension Service for 20 years, Mr. Mullis has a weekly garden column
for the Augusta Chronicle, co-hosts a weekly radio call-in show and writes a
bi-monthly article for the Augusta Magazine.
Mr.
Mullis will discuss disease problems and solutions on trees, ornamentals and
turf in the Augusta area. All forms
of control will be discussed.
